Yoga & the Shamanic Journey with Shamanic Breathwork @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Oct 29 @ 1:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Join Kirsten and Leigh-Ann for a deeper dive into using Shamanic Breathwork to explore our inner realms, help deepen our spiritual practice, and clear the chakras. In this sacred circle we will strengthen our connection to our roots and open to the Higher Heart.

This gentle guided journey & yoga workshop is open to both returning and first time journiers. The workshop includes sacred teachings, yoga postures to prepare the body, & a guided journey using music & the breath. Limited to eight spaces.

The Shamanic Breathwork Process includes…

  • Sacred Space- the protected container required for release, renewal and transformation
  • The Breath- a cyclical breathwork technique that takes the breather into the inner psyche
  • Journey Music- chakra attuned music that guides the journey and shakes up stuck energy
  • Bodywork- gentle support to facilitate movement of energies & emotional release
  • Shamanic Shakti Art Process- intuitive mandala art to ground the journey in non-linear form
  • Group Processing- dynamic support to integrate journeys through story, ritual and community

“Shamanic Breathwork is an outgrowth of depth psychology, ancient indigenous practices, addiction and co-dependency treatment, and modern mind-body medicine research.

In a safe and nurturing environment, you may open to expanded states of consciousness usually only experienced in dreaming: where self-healing is experienced.

This work allows you to release stuck emotions, free creative energy and reaffirm your connection with the divine, while group process aids you in discovering how to apply these healing experiences to everyday living.”

Judy Red Hawk, PhD, RDT

Wheels of Life: Deep Dive Into the Chakra System @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Nov 5 @ 1:30 pm – 3:30 pm

Each chakra has its own tone, feel, essence. None of them is any more valuable than the others; yet, when each chakra is strong and clear, they harmonize together in a beautiful system of balance. This ancient science is an amazing tool that can help us find wellbeing and direction in the inevitable challenges & frustrations of being a human. They are especially applicable in our post-covid world.

In this course, we’ll take a deep dive into each individual chakra (including chakra 8, the aura). We’ll also weave the whole system together, exploring how it functions as its own organism – and how the chakras impact one another. This series moves from the top down, starting with chakra 7; we’ll use Anodea Judith’s classic “Wheels of Life” for reading on your own, outside of class.

If you’ve wanted to go deeper into the chakra system, this is the course for you.

Cost: $128 // Saturdays, 1:30 – 3:30 PM:

Chakra 7 – crown :: surrender – November 5th

Chakra 6 – brow :: thought – November 19th

Chakra 5 – throat :: expression – December 3rd

Chakra 4 – heart :: connection – December 17th

Chakra 3 – gut :: power – December 31st

Chakra 2 – sacrum :: thriving – January 14th, 2023

Chakra 1 – roots :: survival – January 28th

Chakra 8 – aura :: integration > Bringing It All Together: February 11, 2023

// bring your mat & props and wear yoga clothes: we will practice some gentle yoga each class

// bring a pen & journal (or paper)

Leigh-Ann Renz has been studying the chakras for over fifteen years and loves how this ancient, “woo woo” knowledge perfectly coincides with modern, data-driven science. She especially enjoys taking yoga off the mat and into the world and greatly appreciates how the chakras allow us to weave together the seen & unseen, ancient & modern, physical & non-physical.

Proper Ethical Boundaries in Yoga (Immersion Workshop) @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Dec 9 @ 6:00 pm

There is a sacred trust between yoga students and teachers that should be preserved and protected, especially regarding confidential information. This immersive workshop will review in depth proper ethical boundaries in yoga, the scope of practice for yoga instructors, and why it is so important to respect those boundaries for both students and teachers.

We will discuss a variety of situations and scenarios that may arise in yoga classes and how best to handle those situations while staying in the ethical boundaries designed to protect the safety and sanctity of the relationship between teacher and student.

We will go over specific techniques for teachers to handle emotional releases and outbursts in a classroom setting, in addition to a variety of probable and possible scenarios that may test boundaries and limitations of individual yoga instructors. Acknowledging our own limitations as yoga students and teachers can help us better serve our yoga students and their needs in a safe and supportive environment.

Alignment, Adjustments, and Assists for the Modern Yoga Class* (Immersion Workshop) @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Jan 13 @ 6:00 pm – Jan 15 @ 12:00 pm

Alignment, Adjustments, and Assists for the Modern Yoga Class

We will explore the principles of alignment, adjustments and assists with a modern and sensitive approach to each one. The overall philosophy of which will emphasize the importance of how a pose feels being of primary importance over how a pose looks or should look being of lesser importance.

We will also explore the importance of knowing the “why” of these principles and not just repeating “rote cues” that are outdated and not always helpful to the individual. The days of forceful adjustments and rigid alignment ideals are and should be a relic of the past as we now know that all bodies do not look the same or feel the same in any pose nor should they.

It is not our job to force or push a yogi deeper into a pose so they look a certain way because that decision should be more of an internal assessment rather than an external one as only they know if they are mentally, physically and emotionally ready for that deep dive.

Learn how to collaborate and invite in that internal compass and guide from your students so that you can infuse these principles with a philosophy of partnership and collaboration over an “I know best and what this pose should look like” attitude and belief.

Trainees will learn:

  • the different kinds of alignment, adjustments, and assists that can be incorporated into a yoga class
  • how the alignment, adjustments, and assists can be incorporated in a way that is sensitive to students of all backgrounds and experience levels
  • about the variety of different anatomical structures and physiology of students and how these can be observed in students’ alignment during a yoga class
  • how anatomy and physiology play roles in the proper adjustments and assists for a range of students
  • the historical and/or traditional yogic philosophy, yoga lifestyles, and ethics for yoga teachers as it relates to Alignment, Adjustments, and Assists. This workshop will be presented with the framework of the principle of Ahimsa – to do no harm.
  • about appropriate and acceptable teacher-student relationships as it relates to physical touch, language, and cueing under the framework of alignment, adjustments, and assists

This workshop will be taught by Jay MacDonald. Learn more about her here.

This can be accomplished with props, alignment principles, and knowledge of these special considerations.

These include – but aren’t limited to pregnancy, recent injuries, psychiatric disorders, high blood pressure, migraines, and more. This immersive workshop will outline the techniques and methods that can best serve instructors – and students – when special considerations are known in a yoga class.

Yoga for Posture (Immersion Workshop) @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Mar 10 @ 6:00 pm – Mar 12 @ 12:00 pm

Yoga for Better Posture

This immersion workshop acknowledges that it is truly all connected when it comes to proper posture and the spine! A misalignment in one part of the spine affects the position and proper function of the whole spine. There is usually a ripple effect in the entire spine, in fact, and it is often hard to tell where it started and what needs to be addressed first.

In this weekend workshop, we will discuss the optimal alignment of each part of the spine and how common daily activities can start to cause major stress and pain in a variety of ways.

Learn how to protect the spine in a yoga class and common ways the misalignments can show up in a variety of postures. As we know, if it shows up in one pose, chances are it shows up in most poses. We will also explore simple and effective cues and suggestions to help your students “feel” and “sense” that proper alignment and “joint stacking” so they have the internal knowledge and muscle memory of how to re-create that proper posture in and out of a yoga class!

Trainees will learn:

  • the importance of the spine and its alignment as it relates to yoga
  • different postures that support proper alignment of the spine as well as helpful cues to utilize during a yoga class
  • when and how to use props and/or modifications to facilitate joint stacking
  • common contraindicators that may be present for yoga students as well as how they may show up physically during a practice
  • to write and teach yoga sequences and yoga asanas in a way that best supports the posture of the back and joint stacking
  • how and when to incorporate props and/or modifications during a yoga class to support any contraindicators related to the back as well as mitigate discomfort during the class and how to cue in such a way that supports the natural curvature of the cervical, thoracic, and lumbar parts of the spine
  • the structure of the spine and how the natural curves support its proper function and movement and how different yoga postures can help keep the spine aligned and stable
  • the skeletal structure of the spine and body with focus common misalignments and how they can cause stress and how that affects bones themselves

Yoga for Hypermobility (Immersion Workshop)
May 12 @ 6:00 pm – May 14 @ 12:00 pm

Yoga for Hypermobility

Yoga for Hypermobility is somewhat of a misnomer, as those with hypermobility are often discouraged from practicing Yoga, due to the risk of injury it can pose.

However, as you’ll discover in this immersion workshop, certain types of Yoga – and ways of practicing – can help support individuals with hypermobility.

These students are often attracted to yoga because of their flexibility and ease in asana. However, they often don’t have the information needed to protect their bodies and can seriously injure themselves in practice.

To ensure safe classes for all students, Yoga teachers must become more aware of the prevalence of hypermobility in students, the tendency of people with it to be drawn to Yoga, and how they as instructors can foster safe practice for their students (and perhaps themselves).

The purpose of this immersion is to provide students with proper techniques and practices to facilitate proper alignment and movement for individuals who live with hypermobility. Students in this workshop will be better prepared to write sequences, provide good assists/adjustments, and helpful cues to ensure the strength and safety of class attendees.

The content of this workshop will be comprised of lecture/discussion/guided practice/peer teaching. This workshop will be taught by Leigh-Ann Renz. To learn more about her, click here.

Yoga for Joint Health (Immersion Workshop) @ Waynesville Yoga Center
Jul 14 @ 6:00 pm – Jul 17 @ 12:00 pm

Yoga for Joint Health

Learn how to protect your joints from pain and inflammation caused by overuse and repetitive movements. We will explore how to engage the correct muscle groups and stack the joints in a way that prevents strain and discomfort in certain poses and activities.

Each joint has a specific range of motion and that can be very different from person to person. We will discuss how to tell the difference between compression and tension so that you can safely explore your joints mobility, flexibility and adaptability.

You will also learn how to support your joints by using props and/or muscular engagement for comfort and ease in a variety of yoga poses and movements. We will assimilate this knowledge into cueing your students to keep their joints healthy and happy in any yoga class.

You only get one body so you might as well treat it well and use yoga for joint health to take good care of it!

Trainees will learn:

  • techniques for working with the anatomy and physiology of the joints as it relates to a yoga class
  • what specific asanas are useful to incorporate into a yoga class as well as helpful props, modifications, and cues to utilize when teaching a yoga class that supports joint health

  • “I haven’t felt this good since I got my puppy, ten years ago!…”

    – Steve S.

  • “I woke up one morning and realized I was 60 years old, that I could live well into my 80s and that I had to do something to improve my strength and stamina if I wanted a good quality of life. I was caring for small grandchildren periodically, and it exhausted me.

    As soon as I saw Waynesville Yoga Center was opening, I came. I am so thankful to Jay for a place where I feel safe, not self-conscious, and where I can attend classes that benefit me without feeling in competition with anyone else. Restorative and Yin have improved my flexibility and meditation skills; Beginner Flow, Flow Level 1 and Gentle Chair Yoga have increased my strength and balance and also challenged me, as has Barre and Balance!

    I feel better than I ever have – physically, emotionally, and spiritually. I have met so many new friends. All of the instructors I have had are wonderful and willing to share of themselves. Thank you, Jay, your endeavor is making a tremendous difference in so many lives!”

    – Terri M.

  • “That special moment when your body, mind and spirit blend into a yummy synchronized yogic OHMMMMMMM……..yeah, YTT has given me like a hundred of those so far! You guys are awesome!”

    – 2019 YTT Student

  • “Jay met me prior to class to help me polish my yoga teaching skills. I really appreciate her willingness to meet and teach me to make me a better instructor.”

    – Brooke H.

  • “With all of my health issues, I never would have believed I could ever learn to teach yoga. WYC’s Real Yoga for Real Bodies built my confidence as a leader, reminding me that my journey is my strength, and I will actually be a better teacher because of the challenges I’ve experienced. Thank you so much for creating a program that encouraged us to bring the beauty and the beast through this incredible transformation.”

    – CJH

  • “Thank you all so much for offering this. It has truly been a gift in my life and I am very grateful to be part of this class!”

    – Kristen, B

  • “Jay is a wonderful yoga instructor; has great variety in classes; is always dependable (there and on time); is kind and understanding; and always available to answer questions and give additional instruction if necessary. She is calm and classes are enjoyable no matter the challenge.”

    – Myndie S.

  • “What has set the program apart for me, as well, is the approach to teaching that encourages us not to focus on a “perfect” pose, but rather perfecting a pose within our bodies and the bodies of our students. This means everyone’s expression of a pose will be slightly different, and there is such beauty in that. It runs counter to so much that we are taught elsewhere in life.”

    – Kristen, B

  • “Jay is an always-patient, highly skilled teacher who makes everyone feel welcome and able to participate. Her class is always a joy and rewarding.”

    – Barbara S.

  • “WYC YTT has given me such tremendous depth in my practice of yoga on and off the mat. I’ve loved seeing my evolution this year as I learned all the ways I can add yoga to my home and work life. I started just expecting to build a stronger personal practice, but now I am so excited to see where this will all take me in the years to come.”

    – 2019 YTT Student

  • “Jay takes time to answer questions, to give help when needed in performing movements and is a gentle, calm person which helps my yoga experience.”

    – Anita S.

  • “I waited years looking for the right yoga teacher training program and WYC was definitely the reason why. I’m absolutely convinced I could not have found a program that was more creative, inclusive, or supportive. I would definitely attribute that to the meticulous design of the curriculum and incredibly talented teachers you brought in to lead so many cool facets of the course. You drew in some of the most amazing students with all this awesomeness and I’ve been so thrilled to learn alongside them this year so thank you, thank you, thank you for every last delicious bit of it.”

    – CJH

  • “Amber, you’re an incredible teacher! You are a natural at creating flows that challenge and inspire your students.”

    – Michelle G.C.

  • “After my first private session with Amber my body felt so good! Because of her guidance and personal assisting I highly recommend working with her.”

    – Barbara B.

  • “When I first began practicing yoga, it seemed like the more I learned, the more I wanted to know. I bought a few books but still didn’t feel like a real student of the practice of yoga. When the 200 hour YTT was offered, I saw it as the perfect chance to really expand my knowledge. I have come to realize that with this deep dive into the practice of yoga, I have a strong knowledge bank that will allow me to continue to expand my knowledge of yoga for years to come.”

    – Jann F.

  • I signed up for YTT thinking I had time to myself to focus on me, but the world has other plans. It’s still the best decision I’ve made, and I am so grateful that what I have learned has come to me at a time that I can apply it to so much real world trauma. This YTT has been a saving grace!

    – Kim T.

  • “One of the things I have loved about the program is that we are not just learning how to teach certain poses; I have been learning things I didn’t even know I could learn about yoga in general, including about the subtle energies, how they tie to both anatomy and the philosophy of yoga.”

    – 2019 YTT Student

  • “My experience during my YTT at WYC has not only increased my confidence on the mat but has opened up endless possibilities and opportunities for a courageous, confident, and grateful life off the mat. “

    – Teresa F.

  • “Since I started taking classes at Waynesville Yoga Center, I can now go down the stairs ‘normally’, instead of one foot at a time. I’m really pleased with how these classes are helping me.”

    – Carol L.

  • “Amber is an incredibly gifted instructor, particularly when it comes to yoga. She is calming, thorough, and provides that extra-added touch of essential oils, gentle adjustments, and themed practices. I love that Amber’s yoga classes are dynamic and she’s taught moves in her classes that I’ve never done in 15 years of practicing yoga. She’s a breath of fresh air in the yoga scene. I highly recommend her!”

    – Christine G.

  • “YTT provided me with the tools and knowledge to deepen my own yoga practice and help others with theirs. This program challenged me in unforeseen ways and I am so thankful to have experienced this journey with such incredible teachers and fellow students. It was truly a life-changing experience.”
